Of Pirates and Special effects

This being a personal review of the Pirate of the Caribbean 3

Once again the swashbuckling, funny-one-liner spouting, dirty, feminine walking, crazy face making pirate of the caribbean, Jack sparrow is back on the silver screen to delight, thrill and induce nausea in the masses. Only this time he doesn't seem to do it as much as in the earlier installments. Come to think of it, he hardly gets a full hour of screen time in a 3 hour running time movie which attributes its multi-billion dollar franchise success to none other than Johnny depp!!!. That was a disappointment. Jack enters the scene after a good half of hour into the first half and - for the most part in the movie he wears the what-the-fuck-am-I doing- here look. For the rest of his screen time, which is not much, however, he dominates and has u in splits with his ever funny acting and slang.

In the first instance the movie starts off on the wrong foot - In singapore. The reasons for the leading lady and 1st film villain to be there is hardly given a thought too. But then nothing in the immensely convoluted epic of betrayals and fickle relationships seems to have been given some thought. The director has made up wild fantasies and sub plots to induce haphazard twists in the story. And all this fuss about the end of the world turns out to be a damp squib apart from a grand, jaw dropping cg sequence. Orlando bloom sucks big time. He has miserly screen time and manages to botch up. But in the first place this ain't a tale about him so can't really blame him completely. chow yun fat looks impressive and manages to pull off a decent job. But the crowning bane in the film is keira knightly. Gorgeous though she is, the role that has been made out for her is as bad as her acting. Her feeble attempts at bravado and inspirational heroism fall flat. The film makes her the king of the pirates!!! I havent heard anything more ridiculous!!!. Enough of about the worst section of the film - the cast and acting!!...Lets get down to real business.

This film is all about special effects, stunning stunts and CG, CG and more CG. Never in recent times has Computer graphics been used on such a large scale over such a length of screen time and with so much realism. This film is worth watching in the theatres only for the special effects.
But these are so mind boggling and awe inspiring the director gets so wrapped up in it that he conveniently overlooks everything else. The climax is a stupendous blend of ultra realistic cg and stunningly choreographed stunt sequences.

Also worthy of mention is the hilarious introduction of jack sparrow, the ruckus at the brethren of pirates meeting, sizzling locations and grand costumes and intricately detailed makeup for tons of characters.

Final Verdict : CG....CG.....CG....CG.....oh yes...jack sparrow (almost forgot)!!!!
