Of a long break and then some!

Yes, I have been off the radar for close to 2 months now. College has been tight so couldn't spare the time to jot down stuff. Wrote the gre and managed a decent 1320, nothing big, but enough for the effort I put in. Going to college and been doing the usual stuff. You know, same shit different day. Got lotsa of in-campus student wars to deal with and the enormous pressure from the upcoming cultural which we gotta win. Apart from this gotta deal with placements at end of year and stupid seniors who keep harping on us and irritating us. Am in chennai rt now. Been roaming around on my dad's car and going places with friends. That's about it for now.

Of Doomsday!

This being the day of my reckoning!

I am writing my gre tomorrow in Trivandrum. I am leaving Chennai by flight this afternoon. This is only my second trip on the metallic tube. So, am vaguely excited. I am hoping to do the exam well. I will be going straight to college from Trivandrum. Sigh!..Another year of getting up late, Skipping Breakfast, cramming at the last minute, Student wars, projects and sleeping in class!!.
Gotta be very focused cause this is a pretty critical year what with placements around the corner.
So I am signing off by wishing myself to do my best!

Of Pirates and Special effects

This being a personal review of the Pirate of the Caribbean 3

Once again the swashbuckling, funny-one-liner spouting, dirty, feminine walking, crazy face making pirate of the caribbean, Jack sparrow is back on the silver screen to delight, thrill and induce nausea in the masses. Only this time he doesn't seem to do it as much as in the earlier installments. Come to think of it, he hardly gets a full hour of screen time in a 3 hour running time movie which attributes its multi-billion dollar franchise success to none other than Johnny depp!!!. That was a disappointment. Jack enters the scene after a good half of hour into the first half and - for the most part in the movie he wears the what-the-fuck-am-I doing- here look. For the rest of his screen time, which is not much, however, he dominates and has u in splits with his ever funny acting and slang.

In the first instance the movie starts off on the wrong foot - In singapore. The reasons for the leading lady and 1st film villain to be there is hardly given a thought too. But then nothing in the immensely convoluted epic of betrayals and fickle relationships seems to have been given some thought. The director has made up wild fantasies and sub plots to induce haphazard twists in the story. And all this fuss about the end of the world turns out to be a damp squib apart from a grand, jaw dropping cg sequence. Orlando bloom sucks big time. He has miserly screen time and manages to botch up. But in the first place this ain't a tale about him so can't really blame him completely. chow yun fat looks impressive and manages to pull off a decent job. But the crowning bane in the film is keira knightly. Gorgeous though she is, the role that has been made out for her is as bad as her acting. Her feeble attempts at bravado and inspirational heroism fall flat. The film makes her the king of the pirates!!! I havent heard anything more ridiculous!!!. Enough of about the worst section of the film - the cast and acting!!...Lets get down to real business.

This film is all about special effects, stunning stunts and CG, CG and more CG. Never in recent times has Computer graphics been used on such a large scale over such a length of screen time and with so much realism. This film is worth watching in the theatres only for the special effects.
But these are so mind boggling and awe inspiring the director gets so wrapped up in it that he conveniently overlooks everything else. The climax is a stupendous blend of ultra realistic cg and stunningly choreographed stunt sequences.

Also worthy of mention is the hilarious introduction of jack sparrow, the ruckus at the brethren of pirates meeting, sizzling locations and grand costumes and intricately detailed makeup for tons of characters.

Final Verdict : CG....CG.....CG....CG.....oh yes...jack sparrow (almost forgot)!!!!

Of gre and head aches

This being my first blog....

I have been preparing for the gre for over a month now. I am writing it on jun 18. Some books, online material, mock tests and general head spinning words are part of the game. Soliloquy occurs uncalled for but nevertheless welcome. Hedonism fights to get the better of erudition. 7th std math strangely appears - what the ****!!. To score 1400+ is to come first anything less would be a failure and relegation to obscurity and a month of nothingness.

Of The Superstar, Shivaji and cliches

This being an excerpt from rediff.com movie reviews.

Okay, so it is a riches-to-rags-to-riches tale. There is no logic in the movie. I can tell you the story in one line. The villains are dumb and incapable of causing any harm to the hero, in spite of being taller and stronger. The heroine is super pretty and she falls for our hero rather effortlessly.

But seriously, who cares about all this? I was sitting in a theatre in Atlanta after paying $21 for a ticket -- that's a Sivaji Special rate; I would think twice if I had to pay half that price to watch Spider-Man 3.

But honestly, I could give that money once more just for the movie experience. There was this guy in the theatre who wore a Sivaji-style wig, and entertained people even before the movie started. There was another guy, who spent around $50 on popcorn and distributed it to everyone so people could throw it in the air when Rajni filled the screen. Another gang brought camphor and pumpkins to show to a Rajni poster. They started dancing and yelling way before the film started.

For every 'cool' dialogue that Rajni mouthed, there were whistles, trumpets, claps, yells and the adrenaline was constantly pumping. Well, that's what you get from a Rajni movie and that's worth every penny you pay and more!

Dhada Dhadavena nadapathum style, pada padavena siripadhum style, vara vara ellame style -- That pretty much sums the movie experience. Lets welcome the enigma, the rock star, the uncrowned king of Indian cinema once more! And will he satisfy his fans? Hell, the movie is going to burn cash registers for sure!

The film starts with Rajni returning from the US. Like most Shankar movies, the story revolves around the hero's plan to transform India into a developed country. Like most Rajni movies, the protagonist overcomes the hurdles and builds his fortune. Cliched it is, it all ends up going to the benefit of the poor.

The first half is filled with humour and is so steadily paced that the viewer never loses interest. The second half is action-packed, with Rajni at the helm of affairs. From romancing Shriya to bashing the villains, Rajni does everything in style. The scene where he does a Sivaji, MGR and Kamal Hassan is truly magic!

Shriya looks beautiful and enacts her role well. Vivek brings the house down with his comic timing and dialogues! Suman, as the villain, is adequate. The rest of the supporting cast helps build the story.

Shankar has done a great job presenting the film to Rajni fans! From song picturisation to screenplay, his efforts are seen in every frame.
Any word to describe A R Rahman's music would not be enough. His music rocks!

Rajni fans are going to lap this one up like never before. He is the only reason why this film rocks.
